Proximal femur fragility fractures continue to be a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States and around the world. At our institution, a fragility fracture is defined as any fracture in a patient over 50 that follows a fall from a standing height or similar low energy mechanism, though definitions differ depending on the center [1]. Globally, there were 10 million fragility hip fractures in 2019, and by 2050, that figure is predicted to almost treble [2,3]. Following hip fractures, loss of functional status and walking ability is almost certain, and many patients also lose their capacity for independent living.

Two germ line mutations that may contribute to the development of iMCD are described by Chan et al. Each twin had heterozygous mutations in the tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated factor (TRAF) gene and homozygous mutations in the nuclear receptor cooperator 4 (NCOA4) gene. You et al. previously reported variants in NCOA4 in 5 out of 22 patients (23%) with iMCD.2

The loss of erythrocyte surface proteins causes paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH), which in turn triggers complement activation and all of its consequences. In this case study, a 57-year-old man with myelofibrosis (MF) and post-essential thrombocythemia (ET) presents with symptoms of anemia and hemolysis. Despite the workup localizing hemolysis to the intramedullary region, the precise diagnosis remained unclear, necessitating a protracted course of steroid medication to control anemia.

Blood transfusions are necessary for patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) and thalassemia as part of their supportive care. Red cell alloimmunization is one of the treatment’s most dangerous adverse effects, though. This study set out to determine the frequency and specificity of red cell alloimmunization in Egyptian individuals with sickle cell anemia and thalassemia.

Pneumonia causes considerable morbidity and mortality in leukemic and bone recipients of bone marrow transplants. We investigated the bronchoalveolar lavage’s (BAL) diagnostic yield in these newly infiltrated patients. Approximately 200 patients who had bronchoscopy at a single university cancer hospital and were not HIV leukemic or receiving hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) had their retrospective charts reviewed.
